About 50 firefighters needed about eight hours Tuesday to extinguish a sizable blaze at a plastics recycling facility in Frankfort, Ind.

The fire at R&A Plastics Inc., near the city’s western border, was reported at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday and under control by late in the afternoon, according to Frankfort fire officials.

The last crews left the scene around 7:30 p.m., according to Assistant Chief Ed Cripe.

“The fire was contained to the outside. It did not get into any building or any structure,” he said Tuesday evening.

Pallets of recycled plastics and paper fueled the blaze, Cripe said.

About 33 firefighters from Frankfort were helped by volunteer crews from a handful of surrounding communities, the assistant chief said. Crews needed a total of eight vehicles, including four engines and two ladder trucks, to put out the fire.
